GKII Education Liaison Service (ELS)
Expanding JHU’s Engagement & Opportunities with India’s Higher Education Sector
Johns Hopkins University has built a strong relationship with India through decades of research collaborations, academic exchanges, and institutional partnerships. To expand this engagement, the Gupta-Klinsky India Institute (GKII) Education Liaison Service (ELS) supports faculty and divisions across JHU in their India-focused education and research initiatives.
GKII’s ELS acts as a central hub, helping Hopkins faculty and administrators engage effectively with Indian institutions, policymakers, and students. The service provides insights into India’s regulatory landscape, market trends, and partnership opportunities, ensuring JHU aligns its global education strategy with India’s evolving needs. Faculty members receive tailored consultations, access to research, and networking opportunities that help them launch and expand collaborations. Additionally, ELS provides an opportunity for multidisciplinary educational collaborations for new academic programs and research collaborations led by GKII in partnership with Hopkins faculty and India partners.

Featured GKII ELS News & Events
GKII’s ELS program has led numerous initiatives that deepened JHU’s educational partnerships and engagement in India.
This engaging panel “Internationalization of Higher Education: U.S.-India Education Collaborations for Global Competitiveness,” at GKII’s inaugural Hopkins-India Conference brought together leaders in academia, industry, and international education policy to explore how cross-border partnerships in higher education can drive excellence, equity, and innovation. Discussions centered on the opportunities and challenges of internationalization for Indian and U.S. institutions. With India now the largest source of international students in the U.S., the conversation focused on the potential of higher education to act as a bridge between the two countries—driving research, talent pipelines, and innovation. Panelists also touched on policy frameworks, noting recent developments allowing top foreign universities to establish campuses in India and vice versa, which could accelerate collaboration. The key takeaway was that internationalizing curricula and research is not a zero-sum game; rather, by working together, Indian and American institutions can produce globally competitive talent and knowledge that benefits both societies. During President Ron Daniels’ visit to India in November 2024, JHU strengthened relationships with Indian universities and government leaders through ELS support. A key meeting with Union Minister of Education Shri Dharmendra Pradhan explored opportunities under India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, focusing on joint degrees, faculty exchanges, and research in AI and data science. The minister welcomed JHU’s commitment to partnering with top Indian institutions, while the delegation also met with Higher Education Secretary K Sanjay Murthy to discuss expanding academic collaborations. Additionally, during this trip, GKII organized a panel on higher education and hosted several key meetings between Hopkins academic leadership and Indian industry and institutions.
The GKII ELS Program Manager organized a JHU School of Medicine & IIT Hyderabad Virtual Faculty Healthcare Research Workshop where experts explored joint research opportunities. Additionally, ELS has expanded JHU’s executive education and professional training programs in India, strengthening partnerships that connect the university with Indian professionals seeking advanced learning opportunities.
As governance challenges become more intricate and multifaceted, the ability to make strategic, informed decisions is crucial for public administrators. In response to this need, the GKII and the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) partnered to deliver a cutting-edge leadership training program for India’s Civil Services officers. Central to this initiative is the Friday Night at Emergency Room (FNER) simulation, which is designed to sharpen decision-making under pressure and equip officers with tools to manage complex, real-world crises. Effective grant writing is crucial to secure funding for high-impact research projects. Yet, these essential skills are often overlooked in formal education, leaving many researchers struggling to advance their work. To overcome this critical knowledge gap, the Gupta-Klinsky India Institute at Johns Hopkins University organized the “Grant Writing Workshop: Building Effective Specific Aims Pages” with the goal of equipping researchers to articulate their vision, demonstrate potential impact, and secure the financial support essential for driving innovation and transformation.
