JHU Celebrates Diwali 2023

On Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, hundreds in the Johns Hopkins community came together to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. Celebrated in India and across the world, Diwali marks the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. In households across the world, lamps are lit to mark this auspicious festival, one of the most important holidays of the year.

The Homewood Diwali celebration is the largest student-run campus event of the year, organised by the Hindu Students Council, a student-run Religious and Spiritual Life club on campus.

Beginning with a traditional aarthi, the event featured music, singing, food and festivities. This year’s Diwali event featured stunning performances from Hopkins’ Indian and South Asian dance, acapella and music groups. From contemporary Bollywood beats to classical renditions, a myriad of musical genres filled the halls of the Ralph S O’Connnor Recreation Center. Delicious Indian snacks including samosas and gulab jamoons were also served for the in attendance, for an authentic Indian cultural experience. The venue, adorned with decorations, glistened with bright lights to mark the festive season.

The student community was deeply honored to receive President Ron Daniels of Johns Hopkins University and his wife, who extended their support for the event by attending the Diwali cultural festivities.

The Indian community and diaspora on campus are deeply grateful for the sense of culture and community on campus, which has made Johns Hopkins truly feel like home.
