The Gupta-Klinsky India Institute at Johns Hopkins University is initiating its fourth Breakthrough Research Grant Program in collaboration with the Koita Centre for Digital Health (KCDH) at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. This flagship program has initiated diverse collaborations between Johns Hopkins University and various Indian Institutes on a wide array of disciplines including Climate Change and Health, Non communicable Diseases (NCDs), and Health Data Reasearch.
 
In its current iteration, the program aims to bring the best of Hopkins to India for developing sustainable, scalable, and impactful collaborative work on Digital Health. To provide detailed insights into this opportunity, we are co-hosting an information webinar to bring together potential Principal Investigators who are interested in this research grant, allowing them to learn more about the program and explore collaboration opportunities with KCDH.

What is the GKII IIT-B breakthrough grant program?

The Breakthrough Research Grants Program provides funding for pilot projects led by faculty members from Koita Center for Digital Health, IIT-Bombay (KCDH), and Johns Hopkins University (JHU) that involve interdisciplinary collaborations.

What is the thematic area of the GKII- IIT B breakthrough grant program?

Proposals in the thematic areas of Non-Communicable Diseases, Mental Health, Infectious Diseases, Maternal and Child Health, Health Systems Strengthening, and Climate Change & Environmental Security will be preferred.

How many proposals will be funded through this program?

In its current iteration the program will fund two proposals up to 60,000 USD

Is there a Letter of Intent stage prior to full proposal submission?

No, this breakthrough grant process only has a full proposal submission requirement with no Letter of Intent to be submitted.

What is the funding mechanism for the grant program?

The grant program has a co-funding mechanism. The joint KCDH-JHU proposals will be funded by the respective institutions. More precisely, IIT-B will fund the KCDH side of the operations up to 30,000/- USD and Gupta Klinsky Institute will fund the JHU side of operations upto 30,000/- USD. Applicants are to note this while preparing the budget for the respective sides.

How many proposals are permitted per Principal Investigator?

Only one proposal per Principal Investigator is permitted for the breakthrough grants program.

What is the duration of the grant cycle?

The grant cycle runs for a total of 18 months inclusive of time for IRB and other approvals.

What are the eligibility criteria for applying to the GKII ITTB breakthrough grants program?

The program is open to receiving collaborative proposals developed by associated faculty members from Koita Center for Digital Health (IIT Bombay) and Faculty affiliated with Johns Hopkins University and/or Gupta Klinsky India Institute. What are the timelines for this grant program?

Following are some important timelines for the grants program.

  • Launch Date – November 10th, Friday 2024
  • Full Proposal Application Due: February 9th, Friday 2024
  • Award Announcement: March 15th, Friday 2024

How do proposals get submitted for evaluation?

All proposal submissions are done via the InfoReady portal. Generally, the JHU researchers have an existing InfoReady account and hence are expected to submit the final proposal on the portal. However, applicants from KCHD can also create an account on the InfoReady Portal for submitting the proposals.

What activities can be funded through the funds from breakthrough grant?

Funds are intended for research support, including, but not limited to technical support, lab supplies, assays, travel costs, student costs, and limited research equipment. GKII funds will cover costs for JHU faculty and salary support may be requested. Similarly, funds from KCDH will support the requirements for their respective researchers.

How will I know if my proposal has been submitted?

You will receive an email on the email ID registered on the InfoReady Portal upon successful submission of the proposal on the portal.

How will I know if my proposal has been selected for the award?

You will receive an email from the faculty lead of the breakthrough grants program communicating your successful award.
