GKII-KCDH Breakthrough Research Grant Awardees Announced
GKII and Koita Centre for Digital Health – KCDH (IIT Bombay) are pleased to announce the awardees for the 2024 Breakthrough Research Grants Program! The Breakthrough Research Grants Program is designed to support JHU faculty pilot projects involving interdisciplinary collaborations with India-based research institutes. This opportunity focused on Digital Health, defined as the “use of information and communications technologies in medicine and public health to manage illnesses, health risks and promote wellness” (Ronquillo et al. 2022).
Winning Team #1
Research Proposal: Leveraging India’s digital surveillance system for tuberculosis to assess the effectiveness and impact of novel interventions
“This GKII breakthrough grant will allow our team from JHU and IIT-Bombay to explore how routinely collected electronic health data from India’s National Tuberculosis Elimination Program can be leveraged to amplify the impact of clinical TB research. We have been studying interventions to detect recurrent TB in a trial led by our co-investigator Dr. Jonathan Golub, but trial participation may itself increase recognition and detection of TB recurrence,” Dr. Kendall said. “By adding non-study participants from the ‘ni-kshay’ database as emulated controls, this new project will let us more accurately estimate how TB case-finding interventions are affecting patient health and TB epidemic trends. We are excited to explore this rich data source and hopeful that this pilot project will lead to greater integration of large-scale digital health data into future TB research in India.”
Winning Team #2
Research Proposal: Development of a breast cancer risk prediction tool for the Indian population
Koita Centre for Digital Health (KCDH) at IIT Bombay is the first of its kind in India, focused on driving academic programs, research, and industry collaborations in Digital Health. KCDH addresses the need for engineering, clinical professionals and entrepreneurs in Digital health and creates research and employment opportunities in this domain. IIT Bombay partners with leading hospital systems, healthcare research, and academic organizations which have strong capabilities in different branches of medicine and healthcare.
